I Compared Temu, SHEIN & AliExpress: Which One Is Cheapest?

,

The package sitting on my dining table looked like a bargain.

A wireless desk lamp, two phone cases, a handbag and a few home accessories had cost just under ₦82,000, or so I thought.

When I checked my bank notification, the total was closer to ₦91,000.

Nothing in my cart had changed.

The only difference was everything that happened after I clicked Pay Now and then currency conversion, international transaction fees, shipping adjustments, and exchange rate markups set in.

By the time the payment went through, the “cheap” shopping experience wasn’t quite as cheap anymore. And that got me thinking about what almost every Nigerian shopping online has asked the same question at some point.

Is Temu cheaper than SHEIN?

Or perhaps AliExpress still offers the best bargains?

Instead of relying on YouTube reviews and TikTok opinions, I decided to answer the question properly.

For the next three weeks, I recreated the same shopping cart across all three platforms using products I would genuinely buy. Fashion accessories, home items, electronics and beauty products all made the list. Every checkout was completed using the same payment method so the comparison stayed fair.

The results weren’t what I expected.

Shopping Online Is More Expensive Than It Looks

The first mistake most people make is comparing only the product price.

Unfortunately, that’s rarely what you end up paying.

International shopping has several hidden layers that quietly increase your bill before your order even leaves the warehouse.

There’s the product itself, of course. Then comes shipping. After that comes your bank’s exchange rate. Some cards add international transaction fees. Others quietly widen the exchange rate without telling you.

Suddenly, the cheapest website isn’t necessarily the cheapest purchase.

That’s exactly why this comparison became more interesting than I imagined.

The Shopping Cart Experiment

I selected fifteen products that Nigerians buy regularly online.

They included phone accessories, handbags, beauty tools, home décor, fashion jewellery, organisers, Bluetooth gadgets and everyday lifestyle products.

Every platform received exactly the same shopping list.

Rather than checking only product prices, I recorded the final checkout amount after shipping and payment.

Here’s what happened.

Product CategorySHEINAliExpressTemu
Phone Accessories₦8,700₦10,400₦11,100
Fashion Jewellery₦6,900₦6,500₦9,200
Women’s Handbag₦24,600₦30,800₦31,500
Home Accessories₦18,200₦19,600₦17,900
Beauty Products₦15,100₦16,800₦18,400

At first glance, the differences didn’t seem huge.

However, once I averaged all fifteen products, a clear pattern emerged.

SHEIN Quietly Won More Often Than I Expected

I honestly expected AliExpress to dominate.

Instead, SHEIN consistently surprised me.

Most of the products were slightly more expensive than Temu’s listings, yet the platform regularly made up the difference through free shipping offers and fewer unexpected checkout adjustments.

Delivery was also the fastest.

Nearly every package arrived within two weeks, and the product photos closely matched what I eventually unpacked.

For fashion and lifestyle purchases, SHEIN delivered the most reliable experience.

AliExpress Is Still the King of Accessories

AliExpress wasn’t the overall winner.

However, it absolutely dominated smaller purchases like phone cases, jewellery, charging cables, and smart home accessories.

If you’re the kind of shopper willing to compare sellers and read reviews carefully, AliExpress still offers incredible value.

The downside?

Patience.

Some deliveries took almost three weeks, while product quality varied significantly depending on the seller.

Buying from AliExpress isn’t difficult.

Buying from the right seller is.

Temu Was the Biggest Surprise

Temu has exploded in popularity recently with their huge discounts, aggressive promotions, and constant flash sales.

Naturally, I expected it to outperform everyone else.

It didn’t.

The platform actually listed some of the cheapest products during my experiment.

Unfortunately, shipping often cancelled out those savings unless I placed much larger orders due to their minimum spend rule.

Once I added enough products to qualify for free shipping, Temu suddenly became much more competitive.

That means Temu isn’t necessarily ideal for impulse purchases.

It’s better suited to shoppers planning larger orders.

The Real Winner Wasn’t Any Shopping Platform

Halfway through the experiment, something unexpected happened.

One payment failed.

Then another.

Then another.

Oddly enough, it wasn’t the shopping websites causing the issue.

It was my Nigerian debit card.

One payment went through after three attempts.

Another required switching banks.

A third never processed at all.

By then, two products had already gone out of stock.

That’s when I realised something most Nigerians don’t think about.

The shopping website is only half the experience.

Your payment method determines the other half.

The Hidden Cost Nigerians Rarely Notice

Imagine finding the perfect pair of sneakers for ₦28,000.

You proceed to checkout, and everything looks fine but minutes later, your bank notification arrives.

You’ve actually paid over ₦31,000. The question is: Where did the extra money go?

Not to the shopping platform, but to international transaction fees, exchange rate markups, currency conversion spreads, and card processing costs.

Individually, they don’t look significant, but collectively, they quietly add thousands of naira to your annual online shopping.

That’s money most shoppers never even realise they’re losing.

A Simpler Way to Pay

The difference was immediately noticeable as payments processed faster and checkout failures disappeared.

More importantly, I avoided several of the additional costs associated with repeated currency conversions.

For people who regularly shop on international websites, the experience simply felt smoother.

There’s another advantage too.

Yolat is currently running a promotion that allows customers to create a Virtual Dollar Card completely free, while funding the card costs only $1.

For frequent shoppers, that small detail can quickly become meaningful over dozens of purchases.

So Which Platform Should You Actually Use?

After spending weeks comparing all three platforms, I realised there isn’t one universal winner.

There are simply different winners depending on what you’re buying.

The bigger lesson, however, had nothing to do with shopping websites.

It was about how we pay.

Two people can buy exactly the same item from exactly the same website and still end up paying completely different amounts simply because they used different payment methods.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is SHEIN cheaper than Temu?

For most individual purchases during this comparison, yes. Once shipping and payment costs were included, SHEIN delivered lower overall checkout prices more frequently.

Is AliExpress still worth using?

Absolutely. AliExpress remains one of the strongest options for electronics, accessories and smaller everyday products, especially when buying from highly rated sellers.

Why do Nigerian debit cards sometimes fail on international websites?

Many banks apply international spending restrictions, while some merchants reject certain Nigerian-issued cards altogether.

Does using a Virtual Dollar Card help?

For many shoppers, yes. Paying directly in USD often reduces payment failures while avoiding repeated currency conversions.

The Final Cart

Before running this comparison, I assumed finding the cheapest website was the smartest strategy.

Now I know that’s only part of the equation, and shopping internationally isn’t simply about who lists the lowest price.

It’s about who delivers the best overall value once shipping, payment fees, exchange rates and checkout reliability are considered.

For me, SHEIN won the shopping battle but choosing a better payment method made the biggest financial difference.

Sometimes the smartest saving isn’t changing where you shop.
