In Nigeria, the Securities and Exchange Commission has warned about the growing promotion of unregistered investment schemes across social platforms, particularly schemes promising unrealistic or guaranteed returns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The good news is that you don&#8217;t need to be a fraud expert to protect yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You need to know what to look for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here are six things that can help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"font-size:clamp(1.039rem, 1.039rem + ((1vw - 0.2rem) * 0.935), 1.6rem);\">1. Don&#8217;t let urgency make the decision for you<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Invest today.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Last slot.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;You have 30 minutes.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Send the money now or lose the opportunity.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pressure is one of the oldest tricks in the book because it stops you from doing the one thing scammers don&#8217;t want: <strong>thinking<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A genuine investment opportunity should give you enough time to understand what you&#8217;re putting your money into.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If someone is rushing you to transfer money, slow down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The FTC also identifies high-pressure tactics and demands for immediate action as common warning signs of investment scams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"font-size:clamp(1.039rem, 1.039rem + ((1vw - 0.2rem) * 0.935), 1.6rem);\">2. Verify the person, not just the profile<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A verified-looking Instagram account doesn&#8217;t automatically mean you&#8217;re dealing with the real person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Scammers can impersonate:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Banks<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Investment companies<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Government agencies<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Financial advisers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Business owners<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Friends and family<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The SEC has specifically warned Nigerians about scammers impersonating its officials and attempting to obtain personal information or unauthorised payments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If someone contacts you unexpectedly, don&#8217;t use the phone number, link or contact details they provide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Find the organisation&#8217;s official contact details yourself and verify the request independently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>If they say they&#8217;re from your bank, call your bank.<br>If they say they&#8217;re from an investment company, contact the company directly.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"font-size:clamp(1.039rem, 1.039rem + ((1vw - 0.2rem) * 0.935), 1.6rem);\">3. Don&#8217;t mistake social proof for proof<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A scam can have:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Thousands of followers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Testimonials<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Screenshots of profits<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Influencers promoting it<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>WhatsApp groups<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;Successful&#8221; investors<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Videos showing people receiving payouts<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">None of these proves that the investment is legitimate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Scammers can manufacture testimonials and fake evidence of profits to make an opportunity appear successful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before investing, search for the company, its founders and the investment product independently. Look for complaints, regulatory warnings and credible information outside the platform&#8217;s own pages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"font-size:clamp(1.039rem, 1.039rem + ((1vw - 0.2rem) * 0.935), 1.6rem);\">6. Never send money just because someone sounds legitimate<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is where everything comes together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before you transfer money, stop and ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Who am I sending this to?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Why am I sending it?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Can I independently verify who they are?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What happens if something goes wrong?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And most importantly:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Would I still send this money if I wasn&#8217;t being pressured?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you can&#8217;t answer those questions confidently, don&#8217;t transfer the money yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"font-size:clamp(1.039rem, 1.039rem + ((1vw - 0.2rem) * 0.935), 1.6rem);\">One final rule<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You don&#8217;t have to prove that something is a scam before deciding <strong>not to send your money<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s an important distinction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If an investment doesn&#8217;t make sense, an unexpected message feels wrong or someone is pressuring you to act immediately, you can simply walk away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your money doesn&#8217;t need to be at risk before you become cautious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And if you&#8217;ve already been contacted by a suspicious investment platform, don&#8217;t send additional money simply because they promise to recover what you&#8217;ve already lost.
